Day 9: Take on a new challenge (Learning Punjabi)

Taking on a New Challenge: Learning Punjabi

As someone who is Punjabi, not knowing the language has always been tough for me. I've always wanted to speak and understand Punjabi better, but I never felt confident in my ability to learn it. Despite this, I decided to take on the challenge and improve my Punjabi skills.

Choosing the Challenge: Learning Punjabi has personal significance as it connects me to my cultural roots and allows me to communicate better with family and community members. Although it felt daunting, I knew it was important for me to embrace this challenge.

Steps and Strategies:

  1. Setting Clear Goals:

    • Short-term Goal: Learn basic conversational phrases and common vocabulary within the first month.
    • Long-term Goal: Be able to hold simple conversations and understand basic Punjabi texts within six months.
  2. Finding Resources:

    • I went to family members who are fluent in Punjabi and started there, asking for lessons or workbooks
  3. Practice and Immersion:

    • I set aside 30 minutes each day to study and practice Punjabi.
    • I practiced speaking with Punjabi-speaking friends and family members, even if it was just simple phrases.
    • I listened to Punjabi music and watched Punjabi movies with subtitles to immerse myself in the language.

Reflection

What I Did:

  • I followed the structured lessons from my family
  • I actively engaged in conversations with friends and family, seeking their help to correct my mistakes and improve my pronunciation.
  • Immersing myself in Punjabi media helped me get used to the sounds and rhythms of the language, making it easier to understand and remember new words.

How It Felt:

  • Initially, it was challenging and sometimes frustrating, especially when I struggled with pronunciation or couldn’t remember certain words.
  • However, as I started to make progress, I felt a sense of accomplishment and increased confidence. Each small success motivated me to keep going.
  • Practicing with friends and family made the learning process more enjoyable and less intimidating. Their encouragement and support were invaluable.

Future Impact:

  • This experience taught me the importance of persistence and consistent practice. Learning a language is a gradual process, and progress comes with time and effort.
  • It also reinforced the value of seeking help and engaging with others. Language learning is more effective and enjoyable when it involves interaction and real-life practice.
  • Moving forward, I will continue to practice and expand my Punjabi skills, aiming to achieve greater fluency and cultural understanding.

Conclusion

Taking on the challenge of learning Punjabi has been a rewarding experience. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me valuable lessons about persistence, practice, and the importance of cultural connection. By setting clear goals, using diverse resources, and actively engaging with the language, I have made significant progress and look forward to continuing this journey.
