Day 7: Failure Resume
Creating a Failure Resume
1. Failing an Economics Exam
Failure: During my first year of university, I failed an economics exam. I had never failed an exam before, so this was a major blow to my confidence.
Reflection:
- What I Learned: I learned the importance of seeking help when needed. I realized that trying to tackle difficult subjects alone wasn’t the best strategy. I started attending tutoring sessions with TAs and study groups, which significantly improved my understanding and grades.
- How It Felt: Initially, I felt embarrassed, hover others telling me they also failed made me feel a bit better. However, it was still hard to accept that I had failed. Later in the year, after I got help and saw improvement, I felt more empowered and motivated.
- Future Impact: This experience taught me that asking for help is not a sign of weakness but a step toward success. In the future, I will be more proactive in seeking assistance and collaborating with others when facing challenges.
2. Sports: Getting Cut from the Basketball Team
Failure: In grade 9, I tried out for the basketball team but didn’t make it. This was especially tough because I loved the sport and had high hopes of playing for the school team.
Reflection:
- What I Learned: This experience taught me about resilience and the importance of perseverance. Instead of giving up, I joined a local basketball league and worked hard to improve my skills.
- How It Felt: Getting cut was a significant disappointment. I felt like I had let myself down, but it also fueled my determination to get better.
- Future Impact: This failure made me more determined and committed to working hard for my goals. It also taught me that setbacks can be an opportunity to grow and improve.
3. Competition: Losing in the DECA Provincials
Failure: In high school, I participated in the DECA provincials but did not place as high as I hoped. Despite putting in a lot of effort and preparation, I did not advance to the next level.
Reflection:
- What I Learned: I learned that preparation and effort do not always guarantee success, but they are essential for personal growth. I also realized the importance of learning from each experience to perform better in the future.
- How It Felt: Losing was disappointing, especially after all the hard work. However, it was also a valuable learning experience and a chance to analyze what I could have done better.
- Future Impact: This experience taught me the value of resilience and continuous improvement. I now approach competitions and challenges with a mindset focused on learning and growth rather than just winning.
