Day 14: Visualize a dilemma

Visualize a dilemma

Dilemma 1: Receiving a Poor Grade on a Major Assignment

Situation: Getting a bad grade on something I put a lot of time and effort into

Fixed Mindset Reaction:

  • Thought: "I'm just not good at this subject. No matter how hard I try, I'll never improve."
  • Action: Avoid seeking help or trying different study methods. Feel discouraged and consider dropping the course.

Growth Mindset Reaction:

  • Thought: "This grade shows I need to change my approach. I can learn from this experience and improve."
  • Action: Seek feedback from the instructor, identify areas for improvement, and adopt new study strategies. Stay committed to the course and view the setback as an opportunity for growth.

Reflection: The fixed mindset reaction led to feelings of defeat and a desire to give up, which would ultimately hinder my learning and progress. In contrast, the growth mindset reaction empowered me to take proactive steps to improve and learn from the experience, fostering resilience and a commitment to personal growth.

Dilemma 2: Facing Rejection from a Job Application

Situation: I applied for a job that I wanted and I thought I had a great interview, but I didn't get the position.

Fixed Mindset Reaction:

  • Thought: "I'm not good enough for this type of job. I'll never be successful in this field."
  • Action: Stop applying for similar positions and avoid seeking feedback on the application. Feel demoralized and question my career path.

Growth Mindset Reaction:

  • Thought: "This rejection is a learning opportunity. I can improve my application and interviewing skills for the next opportunity."
  • Action: Request feedback from the employer, refine my resume and cover letter, practice interview skills, and continue applying for other positions with renewed determination.

Reflection: The fixed mindset reaction would lead to a halt in progress and a lack of confidence in my abilities. The growth mindset approach, however, encourages continuous improvement and persistence, increasing the likelihood of future success and personal development.
